A changing revenue model forces utilities to rethink strategy

For decades utility revenues were built on predictability. Regulated returns, stable consumption patterns and long asset lifetimes allowed boards to plan with confidence. That model is now eroding. Decentralisation, digital platforms and customer-centric services are shifting the basis of income from simple volume sales toward diversified revenue streams - including energy management services, flexibility participation and platform-oriented solutions.

Academic working papers on energy sector digitalisation and new business models show that distributed generation, prosumer behaviour and digital technologies such as AI, machine learning and blockchain are enabling entirely new value propositions in the energy market. These models emphasise customer engagement, peer-to-peer market participation and platform-driven services over traditional commodity sales, expanding potential revenue sources beyond kilowatt-hour consumption.

Complementing this, research on prosumer business models in Europe highlights how collective self-consumption, citizen energy communities and tailored energy services create opportunities for utilities to capture value from activities previously outside regulated frameworks. The European Commission’s Clean Energy Package enshrines prosumer rights, further accelerating this trend and making new revenue streams both regulatory-supported and economically attractive.

Utilities therefore face a strategic inflection point. Expanding asset bases no longer guarantees stable returns. Value increasingly lies in integration, customer-oriented services and digital platforms that optimise system participation. Boards and executive teams must reassess growth assumptions, shifting investment into capabilities that can monetise flexibility, data and customer engagement - not just commodity supply.
